See Beyond My Face Photographic Campaign

September 18, 2017 / 7:00 am / Toronto

What if everywhere you went, people stared at you? What if you could hear people whispering about you as you walked by? What if a parent whisked their child away from you in a hurry? How would you feel if people made a judgement about you just because of the way you looked? For people with facial differences, this is our constant reality. Every single day we deal with unwanted stares, questions, and uncomfortable interactions. We are often teased and bullied at school, in the workplace, or just out living our daily lives. This constant negative attention can end up affecting our mental health, and can have long term implications. Unfortunately, the movie industry and media often perpetuate the negative stereotype of people with facial differences being evil, oddballs, or criminals. This stereotype is harmful and leaves the impression that we are to be feared or ignored simply because of the way we look. AboutFace’s See Beyond My Face photographic campaign will heighten public awareness regarding the facial difference community. We want you to see our faces, but we also want you to see the person beyond the facial difference, and recognize that we deserve to be treated just like everyone else. Our goal is to help create an inclusive society where people with facial differences are accepted and valued. Take the time to learn about who we are as people, and help us normalize facial differences. It is time we stopped judging people for the way they look. The campaign launches on September 18 and runs through Sept. 22 at the Metro Hall Rotunda, as part of our Craniofacial Awareness Month activities. We will be holding a launch event from 7:30-9am on Sept. 19 where there will be light snacks and refreshments. RSVP here: http://www.aboutface.ca/see-beyond-my-face-launch-rsvp/
