Karen McKinney

Karen McKinney is a Community Outreach Worker for The York Centre for Children, Youth & Families. Karen has delivered social skill programs in York Region District School Board and the York Catholic District School Board to help give young students a healthy start in learning strategies to take better charge of their thoughts, feelings and behaviours and she also works with youth to inspire and empower them to overcome adversity, life challenges and stressful situations. Karen is a member of the Canadian Alopecia Areata Foundation and spent many years on their Board of Directors and managing support programs in Toronto and surrounding areas to children, youth and adults living with the rare auto-immune condition called alopecia. She has spoken publicly on the Marilyn Denis Show about her own experience living with this condition and her belief that everyone is loveable and capable and with strong support networks and a strong supporting and inclusive community we all have the power to make a difference in our lives and the lives of others. Her daughter began attending Camp Trailblazers in 2012 and soon after in wanting to give back, Karen joined the volunteer team with AboutFace. Karen has volunteered at both Nova Scotia and Ontario Camp Trailblazers and also at Ontario’s Family Camp. She has loved the connectedness and empowered feelings that have come from her attendance at the Adult Retreats. Karen enjoys building AF’s national capacity through her position of Chair on our Constituency Committee. When possible, Karen also volunteers her time offering mindfulness and mental health workshops.
