Hi, I’m Claire and I’m in grade 9.
I was excited to be part of the Camp Trailblazers video. Camp has made a big difference in my life. It’s a place where everyone has a difference, and everyone is accepted. Seeing my friends, swimming, singing campfire songs – camp is one of my favourite places to be!
Another of my favourite activities is cheerleading. I’ve been doing it for the past five years and love it.
Staying active is important to me because I have some health challenges. I was born with Mosaic Trisomy 22. It’s very rare and people who have this condition are affected differently. In my case, I have several medical issues, including heart issues, hearing impairment (I wear a hearing aid), and facial asymmetry.
I joined the AboutFace Youth Advisory Council this year, and right now we are working on an anti-bullying project for schools. We want to teach other kids to feel comfortable asking questions and starting a conversation about our facial difference, as long as they do it respectfully. Conversations can hopefully lead to friendship rather than bullying.
For my future career, I am exploring becoming a Child Life Specialist. I love working with kids.
I am a cheerleader. I am kind. I am unique!
