We are the McMullens – Dan, Kim and Megan, and this is our AboutFace story. 15 years ago Megan was born with Crouzons Syndrome. We learned of AboutFace from the hospital social worker, however it wasn’t until Megan was two; that we contacted AboutFace, after an encounter with a child who was afraid of how Megan looked. AboutFace connected us with another family who had a daughter with the same syndrome, who came to visit us and share their story. This was such an awakening moment. When they left we looked at each other and said, “This is going to be okay”. Meeting another family from the facial difference community, has been one of the most powerful things AboutFace has done for us and has introduced us to a group that is dedicated to the emotional and social wellbeing of our family.
Dan has volunteered several times at Camp Trailblazers, initially to see through the eyes of kids living with a facial differences; so that we could help Megan. He made strong connections with campers, some that still last today. Dan is a passionate believer of AboutFace and is a board member. Kim has volunteered as a community representative and has made herself available to other parents. Megan has attended Camp Trailblazers for the past 5 years, which is always a highlight of her summer and has made lifetime friends. Our lives have been and continue to be enriched through our association with AboutFace and its members.
